My first comment is that I miss the 6x optical zoom of the 2800 which was really powerful. <p>The camera is beautifully designed, cool looking in a style that will not look out of date in a hurry, and also very compact and thus easy to carry about, say in a shirt pocket. As an architect, I love to be able to whip out and shoot any scenery, sunset or building that catches my fancy at anytime and this serves just fine. To enable me to take lots of photos at a go, I got a 128Mb card which stores 86 images at the 6 mega pixel resolution. <p>It is very simple to use (you literally snap away once you have set up, which is very easy to do) and shortcut buttons eliminate the need to twiddle in the menu section in search of most options such as different flash settings, different resolution settings, Macro mode (amazing close ups), and many others. There are also some pop ups to guide you, reducing your dependence on the manual (which, like all Fujifilm manuals I have seen, is very detailed and easy to use) except for really major issues. <p>Images viewed in the LCD display are really clear and bright when it is used as a viewfinder, especially for indoor shots (was dark for my 2 previous cameras). Viewing of images stored on the card is very easy. You can zoom into images (in playback mode), as well as pan around to see hidden bits (at the sides, top and bottom, which are usually hidden the larger the zoomed image is) which I find a very helpful feature. You can also crop images. The welcome LCD display (and accompanying star trek like bleeps) adds a nice touch. <p>The AF/AE lock is a breeze to use and takes exceptional shots every time. Photo quality is really amazing. You can pick out fine details in the background of the subject. Colours and contrasts are good and sharp. Flash modes are easy to access and dark indoor shots taken using suppressed flash yielded amazing results. However, the darker it is, the more noise in the picture. Outdoor shots on a bright day are unbelievable in their clarity.<p>The Movie clips with audio are very simple to make, and it is very easy to switch between resolutions (320x240 for 120sec clips, 160x120 for 480sec clips). Results are quite good, though best results are obtained where there is a lot of light, e.g. outdoors on a sunny day. <p>Battery life is very good but it's always best to have a spare. The battery charges in just under two and a half hours which also is helpful if you don't have all day. <p>The cradle is stylish looking too. I have mine permanently hooked to my PC and just place the camera on it, switch it on, and the software launches and downloads everything quite fast. <br>The FinePixViewer software is very good. It is very easy to view folder contents at a glance, set up a slide show, etc. You get lots of print options from full photo, Index 1x2 (2 photos on a sheet), 2x2, through to 7x5. <p>Print results are simply breathtaking, whatever the size of paper, up to A3. Colours are rich and images very realistic looking. <p>This is a camera I would recommend without hesitation. It blows away any other camera in its class or price range. I have had it for just 7 months. Friends of mine (one of whom owns a Canon Powershot A70 but wishes he got this) who have handled it are impressed. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive, compact, high resolution camera, look no further. After many years as a casual photo enthusiast using 35mm SLRs long ago, I had a long dry spell of inactivity; earlier this year, I picked up a used Nikon D60 to see if going digital might rekindle my interest via the reduced hassles and cost of shooting in that mode. It was fun, and I had good results, but found myself envying the portability, versatility and ease of use (and startlingly good image quality) of my partner's Fujifilm Finepix Z10fd. So I decided to grab one of the small units for myself. The Finepix A220 boasted 12.2Mp resolution, and our experience with the other Fuji led me to expect that this had a good chance of being a decent unit. While I agree with the reports from others that shutter response is often a bit slow, I've encountered this problem with autofocus cameras of all types; only my old manual-focus mechanical-shutter cameras were 100% reliable about immediately taking the shot when the shutter button was pressed. If that issue is handled better with high-end units, then obviously that's one of the defining qualities of the upscale models. Another minor disappointment is in the handling of the zoom feature; the optical zoom has just 5 stepped settings, and does not permit zooming to a point between any of them. Once again, this is probably an item that the higher-priced models handle better. Using the macro mode, the image resolution and sharpness of the A220 is good enough to allow clearly reading the text on a page of the phone book which was shot from the range at which it filled the frame, and color rendition seems very good indoors; outside, some washout seems to happen in very bright settings, as is often true with film as well. The bottom line, to me, is that this tiny AA-battery-powered box takes pictures with resolution equal to what I used to get from 35mm film, it can take the equivalent of many rolls of film worth of images without needing anything more than an occasional fresh set of cheap batteries, it can focus down far enough to image remarkably small subjects, and its cost of operation is essentially negligible. Many of these attributes are true for the majority of digital cameras, but in my opinion, this is one of the best bang-for-the-buck units I've seen. We are going to France this year and I will be buying another one for my wife. As a point and shoot camera, this is one of the best I have owned. Start up is fast. Saving to the SD card is quick. And the flash is adequate for most indoor shots.<br /><br />There are only two drawbacks: It would be great to have a 5x or 10x zoom, but in most situations, the 3x optical is fine. And, the 2.7" screen has problems with reflective sunlight - I plan on using a cellphone UV film to correct that. <br /><br />It fits in your pocket and is lightweight. Well the scenery was fantastic but this camera destroyed that. We had it set on scene recognition thinking it would take the best photos under whatever conditions existed (night,day,landscape etc..) The pictures came out blurry, grainy or a combo of both a lot of time. Even in the "good" photos which required perfect lighting, the detail you would have expected from a 12mp cam was way worse than a 3mp cam I've owned in the past. The directions are poor at best. It's not a booklet but a foldable paper leaflet that rips easily & that lacks detail/specific info. Under the picture quality settings, they don't even explain what the settings mean, just that they exist. You are expected to know I guess and I'm not new to digital cams in the least. The cover that closes in the batteries and the SD card slips open constantly as you are handling it which is really annoying and we had to tape it just to secure it! Forget taking pictures in low lighting. The majority were absolutely terrible. Spots & graininess. I have loved the portability of this point and shoot, and its ability to capture RAW data images - enabling professional level adjustments in the post-processing phase. Great landscape camera, as well as a great macro point and shoot camera. My unique gripe is this: I bought my E550 in 11/05. In June 06, I was getting a spot in all my pictures. Naively, I thought it was a spot on the lens, but brought it in for warranty service and learned that the CCD card (the sensor) had burned out a few cells. It was replaced, under the warranty. But now, 3 years later, I have the same issue. The new sensor has now burnt out cells. And not only is the camera not under warranty, but the old warranty service providers advise that Fuji has pulled all its warranty and authorized repair services out of the U.S., so the cameras must be mailed out of country for warranty service. The parts for repairs aren't available here, making convenient repairs and fast turn around times inaccessible to the consumer. I'm concerned about two sensor failures in a well cared for camera. Both, incidentally, occurred immediately after flying, so I'm wondering whether there is some vulnerability to being in a pressurized cabin?? In any event, I'm off now to see whether Fuji has any reasonable resolutions to what appears to be a defective design in an otherwise great sensor. The camera is very quick, takes great macro shots and doesn't eat up (rechargeable) batteries.<br /><br />That being said, 2 days ago it started overexposing my pictures. Then it locked up completely. I was able to get my pictures downloaded off of it, but, after reading other online reviews (especially of Fuji's poor customer service and the persistance of this problem with Fuji cameras) I am now shopping around for a new camera. I decided to take a chance because of the cost and I am glad I did. I figure most people are more likely to write a review if they have bad luck with an item so that's most likely the reason you see mostly bad. When literally tens of thousands or more of a product are sold their is always some bad apples, but mine is great. The design is easy to grip, and it will fit in your back pocket. I have taken around 400 pictures with mine so far, most being underwater around 4 to 8 feet and I was pleased with the clarity of the prints, especially ones taken in a pool. I have had it submersed with the floating Lanyard and forgot about it for hours. No problem. I have also taken indoor shots and they as well look as good as any point and shoot Cameras I have owned that have cost more. The only drawback I can think of is the fact that you have to remove the battery to charge it, but I realized it would be next to impossible to have a waterproof charging port on it so it is just a must. The key to making sure you never have a leak problem I figure must be to make sure before you close the battery door, that the gasket is not dirty, sandy or otherwise not clean since most gaskets would leak if a consistent pressure wasn't applied all around. Also make sure that it clicks, indicating it is securely closed. The only thing I would suggest is the optional High Capacity Battery to take along if doing a lot of video since it uses a 120v. wall charger. So far, it does everything it says it does. She has taken pictures and taken videos under water. It worked. No leaks yet. Seems easy for her to operate. <br /><br />It's still operating so given that it's probably made in China, I guess that's worth something.
